Penggunaan botol BPA adalah membahayakan kesihatan anak-anak

Bisphenol A (BPA) ialah bahan kimia yang ditambah dalam botol susu bayi polikarbonat untuk menjadikannya keras dan lutsinar. Manakala Polikarbonat pula merupakan sejenis plastik yang digunakan dalam pembuatan produk pengguna.

BPA digunakan oleh industri kimia dalam pembuatan plastik polikarbonat yang bertujuan untuk menghasilkan botol susu bayi, bekas makanan dan minuman serta dalam pembuatan epoksi resin yang digunakan sebagai pelapis dalaman bagi makanan dan minuman tin.

Kehidupan manusia tidak dapat dipisahkan dengan penggunaan BPA. Namun begitu BPA merupakan unsur yang akan mendatangkan kesan negatif pada kesihatan manusia.
BPA merupakan pengganggu endokrin (Endocrine Disruptor) yang akan mengganggu pembebasan hormon dalam badan manusia. BPA mempunyai aktiviti yang sama seperti hormon estrogen dalam tubuh manusia dan boleh menyebabkan gangguan kepada fungsi sistem endokrin.

Pendedahan kepada BPA adalah luas. Kajian pada haiwan telah menunjukkan pendedahan kepada BPA pada kadar yang tinggi dan berterusan dikaitkan dengan masalah kesihatan seperti:

• Bilangan sperma yang rendah
• Diabetes
• Hiperaktiviti
• Kanser prostat dan payudara
• Kegemukan
• Masalah keguguran dalam kandungan
• Pencapaian akil baligh awal
• Penggangu endokrin yang akan menghalang pembebasan hormon di badan
• Gangguan terhadap sistem ketahanan

Kesatuan Eropah (EU) telah mengumumkan pengharaman botol susu bayi yang mengandungi BPA pada tahun 2010. Jerman, Perancis, Denmark, Kanada, New York, Australia dan New Zealand telah mengambil tindakan untuk mengharamkan BPA ke atas produk barangan bayi seperti alat mainan dan botol susu berdasarkan langkah-langkah berjaga (precautionary measures) di samping menarik balik secara sukarela oleh pengeluar. Kanada turut mengisytiharkan BPA sebagai bahan toksik.

Pada Mac 2011, Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia akan mengharamkan penjualan botol susu bayi polikarbonat yang menggunakan BPA. Ini bertujuan melindungi kumpulan berisiko tinggi iaitu bayi dan kanak-kanak berumur 0-3 tahun pada masa hadapan.

Industri diberi masa selama setahun sehingga 1 Mac 2012 untuk menghabiskan secara berperingkat produk sedia ada. Dalam masa setahun ini, pihak industri dapat membuat persediaan untuk menghasilkan produk yang tidak mengandungi BPA.
